Canadians are increasingly investing in domestic industries to strengthen the economy and protect the housing supply amid growing economic pressures and a worsening housing shortage.
Build Canada Homes is a newly launched federal housing entity introduced by the Prime Minister’s Office as part of a comprehensive national strategy to support large-scale affordable housing development while lowering construction costs and minimizing environmental impacts.
The plan uses a range of financial instruments—such as loans, equity investments, and direct contributions—to accelerate housing projects across the country. It also includes targeted support for co-operatives, non-profit organizations, and Indigenous housing providers to ensure a more inclusive and equitable approach to housing development.
Build Canada Homes will not only provide funding but also take on a development role, focusing on constructing affordable housing on both public and private lands. A core feature of the strategy is the promotion of innovative building technologies, including prefabricated and 3D-printed materials. To support this innovation, the program includes $25 billion in financing and operational funding for Canadian prefab homebuilders.
The plan also supports workforce development by offering hiring incentives for apprentices and recent graduates, giving them hands-on experience on major federally backed housing projects and helping them build strong résumés for future roles in the industry
Ultimately, Build Canada Homes aims to deliver 500,000 new housing units annually by 2035, while strengthening domestic industries and promoting sustainable, environmentally responsible construction practices.
