Toronto Takes a Transit-Oriented Step with Finch West Line

DENSITY, REVITALIZATION, TORONTO, TRANSIT, URBAN,

Expanding Toronto’s public transit network westward with the addition of a new Light Rail Transit Line along Finch Avenue West.

Toronto is frequently characterized as a major metropolitan area with a high degree of automobile dependence, resulting in significant congestion and pressure on the City’s transportation network. While population growth has continued at a rapid pace, transit infrastructure has historically struggled to keep up, a challenge compounded by the limited number of rapid transit alternatives and the closure of Line 3 (the Scarborough RT) in 2023.

On December 7, 2025, the City of Toronto took a meaningful step toward addressing these challenges with the opening of Line 6: the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT). The new line runs along Finch Avenue West, connecting Humber College’s North Campus to Finch West Station, where passengers can transfer to Line 1 of the Yonge–University subway line.

The Finch West LRT is approximately 10 kilometres in length and includes 18 stops, significantly improving transit access for neighbourhoods along the Finch Avenue West corridor. The line strengthens connections to major institutional uses such as Humber College and integrates local trips into the broader rapid transit network. Beyond mobility benefits, the LRT is expected to support reinvestment and intensification along the corridor, complemented by planned streetscape improvements and enhanced cycling infrastructure. Together, these investments align with the City of Toronto’s and the Province of Ontario’s policy framework encouraging higher-density, transit-oriented development within Major Transit Station Areas (MTSAs).
